Field tests with Vakka-Suomen Voima

Vakka-Suomen Voima and Safegrid conducted another field test together during March, 2024. The field tests were conducted for research & development purposes to further improve the Safegrid grid monitoring system. Based on the learnings, Safegrid’s R&D team gained new insights for various development topics. Coincidentally, VSV was able to find issues in their relay configurations and found a broken insulator during the test period.

Working together is rewarding for both parties

Mikko Heinonen, Operations Manager from VSV was very pleased with the results. The video below shows a deliberate earth fault test, where a tree branch simulates vegetation contact with the power line phase. The purpose of this test is to simulate and measure signals created by the earth fault. In the video, signal waveforms measured by the protection relays can be seen on the top part of the screen. One can notice that the measured current spikes match the Petersen Coil’s U0 coil voltage and the loud sounds created by the temporary earth fault breakthroughs.

Safegrid expresses gratitude to Vakka-Suomen Voima for their long lasting co-operation and the ability to perform field tests in their distribution grid.
