Open Position – Senior Data Scientist

Open Position – Senior Data Scientist

Safegrid is looking for a Senior Data Scientist with primary focus on building production quality ML models with Python (and any other tools necessary).

What is Safegrid?

We locate faults in power grids. When a tree falls on a power line and causes a fault, an electromagnetic pulse is emitted, traveling at near light speed away from the fault site. Our sensors measure the exact arrival time of this pulse. The data is then sent to our servers where the fault location can be calculated. This allows grid operators to send the crew directly to the correct location.

We are not the first to have this idea: the first ever publication is from 1931. But we are the first to build a solution that works. Like really works. We can reach 100 m accuracy in the real world, not only in the lab. And in addition to being very accurate, our solution is also economical and scalable, as testified by multiple happy customers in Europe, USA and Asia.

Safegrid was founded in Finland in 2019. We currently have offices in Espoo and Turku, and global sales presence. We are a team of 27 people, including eight developers and data scientists.

What we are looking for

As a senior data scientist you would contribute directly to our core product: fault classification, fault location, and predicting future faults. The work involves both improving existing functionality and building entirely new customer value on top of the data collected by our sensors. We work as a team–you do not need to know everything, but we hope you can elevate our team on what you know best.

Tech skills needed to be successful:

  • Excellent knowledge of modern ML methods, tools and best practices. Experience related to time series modeling and supervised/unsupervised classification of time series data is especially appreciated.

  • Good practical knowledge of modern Python.

  • Good working knowledge of SQL and databases.

  • Experience with deploying and maintaining ML models in production.

  • Any experience with data engineering should prove useful.

Other important skills

  • Good at sharing knowledge and eager to learn more.

  • You know what it takes to build software with others and strive to make everyone around you work better as a team.

  • You know how to balance speed and quality both short-term and long-term.

  • Interested in learning enough of the business side to understand what the customers need and why. Our goal is to create customer value, not just features.

What we offer

  • Interesting and meaningful work in a growing company with a great product and happy customers.

  • Competitive salary, stock options, health benefits and lunch vouchers.

  • Laptop and company phone.

  • Great colleagues!

Location

Our data science team is located in Otaniemi (Espoo) and we hope you can visit the office at least twice per week. We strongly feel that working together in the same office is important for learning, innovation, and efficient team work. Other days you can work remotely or at the office, as you see best.

How to apply

Interested or just want to learn more? Please include either your CV, or a link to your LinkedIn profile with your application. The first step is always to learn more about each other. We can either have a call, or even better, you can drop by for lunch at our office.

The actual interview consists of two parts: a one hour technical interview, and a live data science exercise with Python. We’d love to meet you at our office at least once during the process, but other steps can be done remotely.
