December 18, 2025 – Safegrid and Elenia have launched a significant collaboration project to enhance the reliability of Elenia’s 110 kV regional power network. Safegrid will supply Elenia with the Safegrid Intelligent Grid System (IGS), a power grid monitoring system designed for precise fault location and fault prediction. The initial project covers multiple 110 kV lines across Finland, with a total monitored length of approximately 500 km. The project includes sensor installations at both substations and power lines. In the future, the monitoring can be expanded to additional lines.
The role of regional grids is growing with electrification and renewable energy
The reliability of the regional grids is becoming increasingly critical due to electrification and growth of renewable energy. A significant share of renewable production is connected directly to the 110 kV regional grid, meaning that faults in the regional network can cause substantial disruption when generation units are unable to participate in electricity markets. Safegrid’s map and coordinate-based fault location and fault prediction solutions help Elenia detect issues quickly, anticipate faults, and minimize impacts on grid users.
“With Safegrid’s solution, we are strengthening the reliability and resilience of our regional grid. Intelligent fault prediction and location solutions speed up maintenance and repair operations, reduce outages, and improve the grid’s ability to withstand and recover from disturbances,” says Santtu Vähäkuopus, Development Manager at Elenia.
“We’re very proud to support one of the leading grid operators in Finland to improve their grid reliability. The importance of regional grids is increasing both in terms of transmission capacity and reliability, and this project is a good example for the need of innovative monitoring solutions,” says Eero Paavilainen, Key Account Manager at Safegrid.
The Finnish power system consists of the transmission grid, regional grids, and distribution grids. The national transmission grid is operated by Fingrid, while regional grid companies are responsible at the provincial level for the high-voltage distribution network, covering the majority of Finland’s 110 kV power lines. Distribution network companies deliver electricity locally at medium and low voltage levels to end-users. Many grid companies, such as Elenia, operate and own both regional and distribution grids simultaneously.
Safegrid’s first major regional grid deployment outside the United States
“The project implemented with Elenia is Safegrid’s first major regional grid delivery outside the United States and reflects the growing interest in monitoring grids at voltages higher than traditional distribution levels in Europe and Asia,” says Klaus Ola, VP of Sales for Europe, APAC & MEA at Safegrid.
Safegrid’s monitoring solutions bring greater accuracy and predictive capability to grid monitoring, strengthening the security of electricity supply and grid economics.
