Wake Electric Cooperative experienced a significant improvement in fault detection on their distribution line, thanks to Safegrid’s advanced fault management solution, the Intelligent Grid System®.
The Challenge
A tree broke at the base and hit the overhead primary wire. Initially, there was a recloser operation from the overcurrent condition, but the fault cleared and the recloser stayed closed after the first operation.
The Solution
Safegrid’s system detected the earth fault and immediately sent an email alert to Wake Electric, pinpointing the fault’s location within a 200-foot distance. This level of precision was essential for Wake Electric’s team, who may not have sent personnel with only a recloser operation followed by restoration. Due to Safegrid showing a fault location, the customer sent personnel to the location indicated and found the tree hung up on the line. Wake Electric also checked their legacy fault indication system, to compare results. It showed a large area of possible fault, in two separate locations, which is not ideal for a fast localization. The visibility provided by Safegrid’s solution was unmatched, allowing for fast response and resolution.
The Result
Thanks to the timely alert from Safegrid, Wake Electric’s team identified the fault caused by the tree hanging on the line and addressed it. This prompt action not only cleared the tree condition, but also possibly prevented more issues, such as fire that could have caused a larger wildfire, unplanned outage, or downed wires.
Conclusion
Wake Electric’s experience underscores the value of Safegrid’s fault management solution. The system’s ability to detect and locate hard to find faults, like intermittent earth faults, and provide real-time alerts ensured that Wake Electric could address issues quickly and efficiently. Safegrid’s solution enhances the safety and reliability of Wake Electric’s distribution line, showcasing the importance of advanced technology and precise monitoring in modern grid management.
