Koillis-Satakunnan Sähkö Improves Its Weather Resilience with Safegrid’s IGS Solution

Koillis-Satakunnan Sähkö (KSAT), a utility in Western Finland, has acquired Safegrid’s Intelligent Grid System™ to improve its grid’s weather-resilience.

KSAT operates a grid comprising nearly 4,000 km lines and 16,000 usage locations around Alavus, Keuruu, Kihniö, Virrat, and Ähtäri in Western Finland. Approximately 70% of the network is overhead lines. The municipality-owned utility’s main objective is to guarantee the availability of power to its customers under all conditions.

KSAT’s strengths include a secure transmission grid, the latest grid automation technology, as well as service-minded expert personnel. KSAT strives to provide efficient and reliable service, and improving its weather-resilience cost-effectively is very important to the utility.

Safegrid’s Intelligent Grid System (IGS) helps KSAT achieve even better visibility into its grid and provides real-time alerts with exact location information to enable faster repairs to minimize service interruptions and downtime.

The system delivered to KSAT initially consists of Grayhawk™ and Grayfox™ sensors for monitoring the network and the cloud-based Gridguardian™ monitoring backend for instant visibility and alerts from a web client and a mobile application. The sensors will be installed at secondary substations and pole-mounted transformers and can monitor both cable and overhead line networks.

“Our wide network consists primarily of overhead lines, and we are very keen on improving our weather-resilience cost-effectively. Over the years, we have invested in building an increasingly more reliable grid and explored new technologies to improve our service quality further,” says the Managing Director of KSAT, Ms. Anu Rantala. “The Finnish high technology offered by Safegrid is exciting to us, and the cooperation has been very smooth. The project has proceeded swiftly thanks to the easy installation of the IGS system and the expertise and service-mindedness of Safegrid personnel.”

“KSAT is a leader in investing in a weather-resilient grid. We are delighted and honored that they have chosen Safegrid as their partner,” says Mr. Jussi Hakunti, CEO of Safegrid Oy. “KSAT’s forward-looking attitude and deep expertise help us develop the quality and functionality of the IGS solution even further.”
