The Challenge
In parts of the Tata Power Odisha network, intermittent line faults were occurring without a clear pattern. The fault would appear, trigger a trip, and then disappear leaving operators without any visible evidence or clear root cause. This created uncertainty and operational inefficiencies.
The Breakthrough
Safegrid’s Intelligent Grid System® analyzed grid behavior and pinpointed the exact fault locations, enabling immediate field deployment. On-site inspection revealed a surprising root cause: large flocks of birds resting on long-span conductors.
When the birds took off simultaneously, the sudden release of weight created a “whiplash” or galloping effect (shown in the video below). The conductors would swing and momentarily touch each other or supporting structures, causing short circuits and tripping events.
The Solution
With precise location and root-cause clarity, Tata Power identified a long-term fix: installing an intermediate pole near the affected span to reduce conductor swing and eliminate recurrence.
